I Am Queen [R18 - Adult Themes]
by The Theatre Practice

The frenzied free-wheeling Fifties. Betty Yong, a dazzling stripper, steps into the spotlight.

A sinister rape and murder sets society abuzz: what dangers will this bring to the woman’s life? What secrets lie behind her string of lost loves and broken marriages? What is her real connection with her foster mother and brother? How does this link to the glittering world of prostitutes, porn stars and centre-fold models?

The Fifties. A time of vice and debauchery. When colonial authority was challenged by a wave of independence. Where culture was inspired by flourishing ideals. Step into the land where Betty reigns as Queen. Together, we shall look at history through her eyes, and unravel  €¦her story.

I Am Queen is the latest play by Quah Sy Ren, co-writing with Liu Xiaoyi, whose previous works include the critically-lauded Invisibility. The production, helmed by Wu Xi (Moving Gods), is a sensational account of a heady era, when an exotic dancer set fire to the public imagination and answered their appetite for change.

€œInvisibility is yet another wryly-humorous look at the afflictions of modern existence €¦its frank social commentary is unmistakable €¦the play's strengths rest mostly on the sparkling dialogue in the script by Quah Sy Ren. € The Flying Inkpot
